Japanese Castles
Japan went through a very long period of feudal warfare and as a result, hundreds of fortress like castles were built.
Although they look very very different from European castles, they were built for the same purpose - they were made to protect the people inside from all sorts of danger.
Most of these castles have a shrine at the very top of the hold.
There are some common aspects that you will notice in a lot of the castles in Japan. For example, most of these castles have a shrine at the very top of the hold. Stealth was the most commonly used tool of protection used in Medieval Japan. A good example of this is the trick of making the castle look like it has five floors while in reality it has six floors - the missing floor was a perfect place to hide materials and troops from their enemies.
Three of the major castles in Japan are the Kumamoto Castle, Matsumoto Castle and the Himeji Castle.
